PORi CORE Specialty Courses
The PORi CORE courses build on pre-request, Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation Course. We have designed the PORi Curriculum to build on the clinicians knowledge base and dive in deep into diagnostic region or the sequelae of chemotherapy across all oncology populations. The content of these courses reflects on our treatment approached that has evolved from our own practice - Oncology Rehab which was established in 2009.
Three of the PORi CORE courses focus on specific oncology diagnoses: Breast Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer or Pelvic Cancers & Lower Extremity and the fourth focuses on the effects of chemotherapy and is applicable to patients with any cancer diagnosis, including those with a focused CORE course.
To build an Oncology Rehabilitation program or to expand your practice beyond one diagnosis consider taking the full PORi Curriculum to support your community of patients through any phase of cancer survivorship for diagnosis (prehab) through end of life care. Completion of the Foundation Course, two disease based course AND Chemotoxicity and Cancer Exercise Management you will be on your way towards PORi Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist designation.

PORi CORE: Disease Site Specialty Courses
These courses will be similar to our pre-2018 4-day certificate program and will build on the PORi Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation course. There will be a re-emphasis of some of the material already covered to ensure participants have a strong grasp of the information they will need in a clinical setting. While there are therapeutic exercise facets to these courses, the primary treatment techniques taught during these courses will be manual therapy-based. In addition, there will be a significant emphasis on lab sessions, including live/video patient presentations which including patient interviewing, assessment, manual therapy treatment techniques and reassessment. In-person courses will allow therapist to have hands-on experience and we encourage virtual students to have a lab partner available during the course to promote tactile learning at home.
PORi CORE: Therapy Intervention Course
While there may be some manual therapy elements to this PORi CORE course, the focus is much more exercise prescription and neurologic interventions to address chemotoxicity symptoms, such as cancer-related fatigue, chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, de-conditioning, balance, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. There will be a strong focus on live/video patient presentations where participants can practice the PORi exercise prescription protocols they are learning.

The PORi Curriculum
All the PORi courses build on the PORi Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation. The Foundation course is a pre-requisite for all the other courses that we teach.
Once a therapist has completed the Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation course they can then go on to complete any of the other courses. There are two types of follow-on courses - PORi CORE Courses and PORi Adjunct Courses. Three of four CORE are disease site specific and Chemotoxicity and Cancer Exercise Management crosses all cancer types- both solid and liquid tumors.

Assessment Based Certificate Programs
All of the PORi CORE Oncology Rehabilitation Courses are assessment-based certificate programs, which means there are written & practical/oral exams that need to be passed at the end of each course. This allows PORi to ensure that participants who have completed the courses understand the material and are able to apply the clinical techniques, protocols and algorithms of treatment into their practice from the moment they complete each course.
Learning from Patients
A key component of the PORi curriculum is we focus on learning for the patient AND from the patient. PORi CORE courses involve learning from either live patient volunteers during lab sessions or via patient recorded video presentations that include not just treatment techniques but also patient backgrounds, objective and subjective evaluations and reflection on the treatment not only through therapist assessment but through patient reports as well. In addition, there is practical exam on the final day where course participants will evaluate the patient in both our live and virtual courses and either participants will directly provide treat under the supervision of the instructor or perform an oral practical on the critical thinking and plan of care execution.
These patient sessions are a unique and invaluable part of PORi's philosophy of ensuring that participants who complete our courses have a practical clinical skill set patient management algorithm and a deep understanding of the physiological impact that cancer and cancer treatments have on their patients.
